After a lacklustre opening mid-week fixture, the U12s finally arrived at the party with a great 6-2 win over newly promoted AC Finchley.

Unlike our most recent outings, we started the game on the front-foot and played pretty much the whole first period in the AC Finchley half. It took a little while to break down the AC Finchley defence, but we were creating chances and Sammy was in particular looking very sprightly up-front. When we did finally hit our first goal, it came courtesy of a great volley from Luke just inside the 18 yard box. The goal game us the spur we needed to keep attacking and we did not have to wait long for the second goal, which came from Sammy, having already been unlucky with a couple of efforts. The goal was just rewards for the infectious energy Sammy was showing up front.

We went into the break 2 – 0 up but came out determined to extend that lead. Alex had threatened the Finchley goal on a few occasions already, including having had one shot parried away by the keeper as it headed for the top corner, but eventually came good with a brace in the space of a 10 minute period to take the score to 4 – 0 as the Finchley team started to drop their heads.

Dillan entered the frame to make it 5 – 0 with a neat finish after showing Finchley a bit of pace but we then started to get sloppy and gave up what would have been a good clean sheet. We allowed Finchley to break from midfield without tracking back for them to register their first, Dillan then completed his brace to make it 6 – 1 but again sloppy work in midfield allowed Finchley to take the final score to 6 – 2.

All in all, whilst clearly areas for us to still improve on, and recognising that we will meet tougher teams than this, a great way to register our first points of the season.

All of the boys played their part today, but man-of-the-match was awarded to Sammy for the way he carried the game to Finchley, at times using his pace to stroll past the Finchley defence at will, and for his hand in so much of what we did well.

Well done to all of the boys.
