Today saw Edgware U12s march into the final 16 of the WFL League Cup with a 3-0 win over Omonia White.
With Omonia languishing at the bottom of the 2nd division, it was a game that on paper we should have been winning, but having been knocked out of the cup by them last season, we could take nothing for granted.
Having returned to a 4-3-1 formation we had a good share of possession and at time made some very good use of the ball.
What with it being a very slippery pitch, the boys knew to get shots off at every opportunity and Alex did just that to register our first goal with a long-range strike that no keeper would have relished the thought of trying to save.
Whilst we were dominating the game for periods, what was a relatively small Omonia team did punch above their weight and often looked threatening on the break, often being the first to the second phase ball.
With that in mind is was good to get a 2 – 0 cushion going into the break when Ben found some space, moved the ball from left foot to right, finishing with his weaker foot.
The second half was much the same, although neither side had many shots on goal, other than us hitting the woodwork with one fine effort. That did allow Omonia to start to feature in the game more and more.
Having said that it was a tricky pitch to play on as a keeper, Keiran had done a sterling job and rightly earned 10 minutes playing outfield. That was all he needed as within a few minutes he darted onto the ball and played a lovely weighted through ball to TJ who finished with aplomb to take the final score to 3 – 0.
A good result overall which keeps us in all 3 cup competitions.
Man of the match was awarded to James who started the game at right back, both defending well and making some great forwards runs when the opportunity arose and subsequently carried the same form forwards when he moved into midfield.
