The first round of this year’s Herts County Cup pitched us against Hadley Wood & Wingate from the 3rd division of the WFL. Whilst on paper a game we should be winning comfortably, as we learned to our peril last season, many of the teams in the 3rd division can play a bit of football and can cause the odd upset.

As it was today, whilst we did not reach anywhere near the standard of football we will need to, to do well in the red division this season, we did more than enough to secure a 2 – 0 win against Hadley Wood.

Both goals came in the first half, the first from a set piece as Luke headed in well from another well taken corner from Adam, and the second was a strike from Dillan, into the bottom corner of the net, far out of reach of the opposition keeper.

We actually played better football in the second-half and could have had a few more goals, in both halves, had we been a bit more clinical with our one-on-ones.

whilst we did not play an expansive game and played very much to the opposition’s strengths, there were a few notable performances today. Adam worked his socks off again on the right wing and made some terrific runs and all the boys at the back were solid throughout. The fact that the boys at the back were called on as much as they were was testament to the fact that we really weren’t dominating the game and on reflection had Matt not made one or two fingertip saves, we may have all had red faces.

The man of the match was awarded to Alex, for injecting a little energy into our performance when he came on mid-way through the first half and whilst he was unlucky not to register on the score sheet, he joined up well with a number of the boys to help carve out several opportunities.
