Edgware u13s 3 v 2 Borehamwood
A really tough league game against Borehamwood today ultimately saw the u13s run out 3 – 2 winners over a spirited Borehamwood eleven.
We started the game really strongly today, picking up on where we left off last week and playing some really neat interchanging passes to frustrate Borehamwood and create several opening chances in the opening 15 minutes, which was when we scored all three of our goals.
Our first goal, in the 8th minute, was courtesy of a free kick which Alex delivered straight onto TJ’s head, albeit TJ still had work to do to finish it off which he did with style to put us 1-0 up.
Just one minute later it was Alex who ran onto a through ball to add himself to the score sheet, to make it 2 – o before turning provider again, this time for Udo in the 11th minute to make it 3 – 0.
For 5 or so minutes it was a passage of play where we were dominant, from the back four all the way through the ranks, reading the game well and distributing it from the back and using it well in mid-field.
As is often the case, at 3 – 0 we started to relax and came off the boil allowing Borehamwood, mentally at least, back into the game, albeit there was now very little between the two sides.
The second half was a very different matter, as for the first 15 minutes this time we played some really poor football. We pretty much stopped passing the ball, when we did pass it we struggled to find our own men and we started to lose one challenge after another, never mind the 50/50’s, we were losing the 60/40’s !
Our job was also about to be made more difficult when a late tackle on Matt put him out of action for the rest of the game (we wish Matt a speedy recovery)
Given how we were now playing, it was thus no surprise when 7 or 8 minutes into the half, they scored to make it 3 – 1, the goal coming from a penalty which Alex Solomon, now standing in for Matt, was unlucky not to keep out.
Borehamwood continued to make our lives difficult, although when Dillan also took a knock (we also wish Dillan a speedy recovery) we suddenly sprung back into life for the last 15 minutes, and whilst we were not playing attractive football, we got our bite back and started to bully Borehamwood back a little.
The fact that Borehamwood scored a second goal with 2 minutes to go was unfortunate, and very much against the run of play at that time, but made for a fitting climax to what was ultimately a tight game.
Ultimately, that spirited last 15 minutes did prove enough to see us out as 3 -2 winners.
All the boys should be patting themselves on the back for that first 15 minute performance in the first half, as much as they should be questioning themselves about the same period in the second.
However, they should all come away very proud of how they came back to battle in the last 15 minutes and protect the lead they had rightfully earned.
Man of the match goes to Alex Solomon for having a hand in all 3 of our goals, scoring one and providing two assists.
